THE WEEKEND IN ITALY

Going into Saturday’s Derby della Mole at the Juventus stadium, which saw a Juventus team looking for their first win in four Serie A games. The seemingly Invincible Juventus had had a torrid run in the league of late, and were looking to use this game to kick off a win streak. Torino had not gotten a win against their city rivals in over 16 years, and had lost every game since 2002 (despite that historically Juventus largest loss ever was against Torino in the 1920s an 8-0 thrashing). In the early minutes of the game Paul Pogba tested the keeper on several occasions, but the breakthrough came for the Bianconeri in the 36th minute, when Glik was shown a straight red for a lunge at Giaccherini.  Minutes later Juventus wasted an opportunity to go ahead when Andrea Pirlo  ballooned his penalty. Torino resisted Juve’s pressure till half time and the game remained scoreless. After the break Juve continued the relentless pressure with a good chance falling to Paul Pogba in the 49th. It didn’t take long for Juventus to break the deadlock, with hometown midfielder  Marchiso plunging bravely with a diving header to put  juve 1-0 in front of the Bianconeri  faithful. In the 67th minute Giovinco put the champions ahead, with a solid strike beyond the reach of Gillet. Several chances fell Juventus’ way all night most notably Paul Pogba who seemed to be a thorn in the Torino flesh. Marchisio with a carbon copy strike of Giovinco’s ended all hopes that Torino might have had in the 84th minute. Juve remain on top of the table 2 points clear of Napoli.

Sunday’s games saw Napoli take on bottom placed Pescara. The game started brightly with Napoli going 2 goals up in the first 15 minutes, and Pescara pulling 1 goal back in the 18th. The goals didn’t come till the second half, with Cavani putting Napoli up in the 58th minute. From there on it was all Napoli doing the scoring, Cavani scored his second of the night in the 63rd and Inler grabbed his second in the 78th inevitably putting an end to Pescara’s’ hopes of getting anything from the game. Roma was away to Siena, Despite Siena going a goal up in the 25th min, a spectacular 2nd half display saw Roma win the game 3-1 with 2 goals coming from Mattia Destro. Fiorentina welcomed Sampdoria to the Artemio Franchi, and despite dominating possession, they saw themselves in a sea saw affair with Fiorentina’s Stefan Savic grabbing the first goal in the 21st min. Sampdoria Equalized in the 48th from Nenad Krsticic and went ahead in the 72nd through an own goal from Fiorentina’s Gonzalo. Stefan Savic grabbed his brace and Fiorentina’s equalizer in the 75th minute. Fiorentina kept pressing to take the lead but Sampdoria held their nerves to take a very precious away point. Lazio took on Parma at the Stadio Olimpico, the raced to a 2-0 lead in the first half, Parma proceeded to claw their way back into the game, grabbing a goal in the 66th after a missed penalty. But 2-1 is how the day ended, putting Lazio in 5th place. Udinese took on Cagliari and went 4 goals ahead only allowing Cagliari grab a late consolation in the 80th minute. Bologna won 2-1 at home to Atlanta while the battle out of the relegation spots saw Genoa and Chievo face off. Chievo got an all-important away victory with Alberto Paloschi getting a hat trick. Inter Milan despite the fortunate victory remain particularly unconvincing without Cassano. Inter faced Palermo and only grabbed the win due to an own goal from Santiago Garcia. 1-0 is what the game ended, but convincing or not Inter remain in the hunt for the scudetto 4 point away from the top of the log.
