The Chelsea Circus

When i set out to write a piece on how Chelsea Football Club had been fairing this season it never crossed my mind that Roberto Di Matteo will be getting a taste of Mr Abramovich's impatience and strong desire for success.  Although after the 'Italian Job' by Juventus many speculated it and it did happen the morning after. So after 262days in the Stamford bring hot seat(winning the FA Cup and Champions League) RDM got the boot. He was the 8th manager in 9 year reign of Roman at the bridge. The longest serving of who was Jose Mourinho who spent about 3 seasons at the club.Roman has spent about £69million on pay off packages to sacked coaching staff. The managerial circus at chelsea has led many football fans to regard the club with ridicule.
The  question is how far did Chelsea think they will go this season? Of course the signing of Oscar, Hazard,Marin, Moses and Azilipecueta  showed a big statement of intent to retain the champions league and win the EPL.
For me Chelsea failed to make two important  decisions in the transfer window. First would have been to sign a world class striker. Champions league hero Drogba left the club and chelsea choose to put faith in Torres who has been less than half the player he was at Liverpool. Since he arrived the club in that £50million pound deal in January 2011 he has scored 17 goals in 70 matches. very poor strike rate for a club that has so much expectations. The other striker at the club Daniel Sturridge swings between average and inconsistent. Lampard a source of many chelsea goals is in the twilight of his playing days. Second Chelsea should have signed a quality centre back. With John Terry been 31 and getting injured more often these days and David Luiz and Gary Cahill always lapse in concentration Chelsea have kept only 2 clear sheets in the league and none in the champions league.
A top quality striker converting half the chances the chelsea midfield create and a very good centre back would have ensured that chelsea wont be giving out charity goals.
Someone other than the manager ought to take responsibility for these transfer failings but ultimately the manager has to should the blame for his team's performance. We never know for sure if Robbie will have been able to weather the storm of the recent poor results but what we do know is that its about time the Stamford Bridge hierarchy stop this quick success model they operate and focus on building a legacy for the club.
With the appointment of Rafa Benitez till the end of the season,we await the next severance cheque Roman will dole out to the growing list of names that are now former chelsea managers.

  1. Inter's experience will be relived,Benitez is as scattered as Chelsea is right now. I hope he doesn't leave Chelsea in disarray as he left Liverpool!

  2. RA is like a newly wedded wife. He goes into his closet and trys out all the dresses in them. It will be hard for Chelsea FC to maintain their position. When a coach is getting a hold on the game, he gets a sack letter. Has United changed their coach. Has City which have only won just one title changed their coach inspite of the Arab money.
RA has the money but he dose not know football. He should leave the game of football to the footballers and coaching staff.

  3. I'm just waiting for the season to end. Let's see if Rafa does well enough to get a permanent contract for a few more months, or if Pep, maybe, will join the Chelsea circus.
